September 2025Plants, People, and Place - Alberta Culture Days
Join us on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 & 14, for a day of tours, teachings, and traditional knowledge as a part of Alberta Culture Days! We’ll be hosting a variety of Indigenous activities on our site, including an opening ceremony, Tipi Teachings, and free bannock and soup for lunch. Join us as our indigenous partners, Elder Dean, Charlenes and Russel Burns, Orlean Lizotte, Linda Ophus, and Clare Butterfly share their knowledge!

September 2025Indigenous People Garden Tour
A short tour and information session designed to introduce participants to the purpose, plants, and practices of a garden rooted in Indigenous knowledge and traditions. Learn about the sustainable garden techniques use to create the garden and the benefits of native plants for medicine and diversity.

Join Elder Dean Johnson and Cree singers in the tipi on Sunday to experience and hear traditional drumming and singing.

September 2025Inukshuk Teachings
Elder Russel Burns will share his Inukshuk teachings and learn about this traditional Inuit soapstone carving. An Inukshuk is a stone landmark or cairn built by the Inuit In Inuktituklanguage around the word means "likeness of a person". These structures were historically used for a variety of purposes, including acting as navigational aids, marking important locations like hunting grounds or food caches, and serving as a spiritual symbol of safety and hope. Participants will work with small soapstone pieces to create in Inukshuk igure. Figures will be glued overnight and available to pick up the next day. Suitable for all ages.

September 2025Rooted History: Indigenous History
The Lacombe Museum and the Lacombe Composite High School Ecovision Program will be at Ellis Nature Centre to promote and educate on the past and present practice of growing food! Come out and learn about how Central Albertans used to grow food, and get the chance to see an amazing Lacombe based project helping students learn the fundamentals of botanical health!

September 2025Beginner Beadwork
Join Orlean Lizotte for this beginner-friendly introduction to the beautiful art of Métis beadwork. Participants will learn fundamental beading techniques and create their very own beaded strawberry, a symbol of health and life in many Indigenous cultures. Throughout the class, we will explore the traditional uses and cultural significance of the strawberry and the history of the Métis beadwork. All materials will be provided, and the workshop fee is $20 to cover the cost of supplies. Suitable for ages 12_ yrs old, Duration 1-2 hours. Pre-registration available.

September 2025Land and Plant Walk
Clare Butterfly, a Cree knowledge keeper will lead a Land and Plant walk. It is an opportunity to learn about the land and its plant relatives from a nêhiyawêwin (Cree) perspective, where every plant has a story, a purpose, and a relationship to all living things. Participants will be walking on uneven ground along trails. Pre-registration available (free walking tour).

September 2025Plantain Salve Workshop
Join Ellis Nature Centre staff in learning how to harvest, prepare, and make plantain salve in this hands-on workshop. You will take home a small jar of plantain salve, a herbal remedy made from the leaves of the plantain plant (Plantago major)used for various minor skin ailments.
