Event Description
Guided walking tours of downtown Red Deer. Historic homes, original businesses, public art, and the stories behind the spots you pass by regularly.
Most art tours are led by someone explaining what the artist was thinking. On this one, you can just ask an artist.
One of the artists who painted murals downtown leads this walk past more than fifty of them, with the oldest going back to the 1980s. Once you start looking, you notice the walls were chosen on purpose. Eye on the Ball is on the eye care centre. I Love My Hairdo is on a hairstyling college. Day & Night is on Day’s Music.
You will hear how a wall gets chosen, how a design goes from sketch to full building, what it is actually like to paint outdoors in Alberta, and what the story is behind the murals being viewed.
You can find these murals on your own with a map. What you get here is the part no plaque tells you: why that wall, why that image, and what you might not know about the artists.
Two hours, entirely on downtown sidewalks, at a pace that leaves room for questions and photos. The tour meets at the MAG front entry at 1PM and heads out shortly after. Dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes.
This tour is free to attend throughout the month of September as part of our celebration of Alberta Culture Days.
