The seven thematic keys from sonic artists’ philosophies and practices can help artists and creatives ‘live well’ in our unpredictable, mercurial modern times. Highlights include learning about “inner technology,” humming as your “internal instrument,” and Stacey playing chimes and a hand-help 22″ gong. Baazinnng!
Stacey Bliss, PhD, is the Research Grant Specialist, Applied Research, at Red Deer Polytechnic. She is also a qualitative researcher, instructor, sonic artist, improvisor, and Earl Grey tea connoisseur. Her interests include critical studies in improvisation, sound studies in education, sound art, as well as sonic and performative ethnography. For her research, Stacey was a Guest Scholar at the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Regina. There she help a SSHRC Insight Development grant (2021-2024) to study theory and practices of sonic artists in varying Canadian provinces. Currently, she is a Research Associate with IICSI (International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation) at the University of Guelph. When not working at RDP, teaching a night class online for U of Regina, or meditating to try and maintain her balance in messy, mercurial times, she likes to collaborate with local and national scholars, musicians, and artists. She also likes to take long walks, drink tea, and chill out.
The presenter talks for 1 hour, followed by a 30 minute Q&A period. These talks can be virtual or in-person.
This learning series is co-presented by the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) and Red Deer Arts Council (RDAC).
